What Does It Really Mean to Shine Bright? (Hint: It's Not What You Think)
The Five Pillars That Transform How You Show Up in the World
In my last post, I spoke about the origins of the Shine So Bright movement and how this idea came to me and connected with me so deeply. Ever since then, I've been really thinking about what are the pillars of shining bright in life.
And here's what's important, these aren't anything external. The reason I've selected these pillars is because they enable people like myself, and others, to understand what this means for you. I'm not telling you what shining bright is or giving you a rigid framework. It's really about understanding what is the right thing for you as an individual, because that might differ for everybody and that's the beauty of humanity.
So today, I'm going to share the five pillars with you.
Pillar One: Ease
I selected this pillar because ease, at the centre of everything, is about finding presence, finding your feet, and letting yourself relax. I understand this deeply because I often feel so uptight, so tense. And when I'm in that state – or when I'm unconsciously in that state – it's really difficult to understand what is right for me, to find that centre, and then proceed from that place.
I think no, I know, that presence and ease is the secret ingredient to transformation. Because by being connected to yourself and clearing out the chaos or the noise, you actually get to tune into what is right and start to make decisions from that place.
Try this: Next time you feel overwhelmed, pause and take three deep breaths. Notice where you're holding tension in your body. What would it feel like to soften just 10% right now? Sometimes the smallest shift towards ease can completely change how we approach a challenge.
Pillar Two: Purpose
Purpose is really about knowing what drives you, what motivates you, and what you value. One thing about our modern society is that it definitely snuffs out purpose, but it's inherent in who we are as humans. It's part of our lived experience, and people that have purpose have a greater quality of life.
And that doesn't mean it's just our jobs. It could be our families, our communities, causes we care about. There's such an array of purpose. Again, I want people to start to really connect with what is right for them.
Reflect on this: What made you lose track of time as a child? What issues make your heart race with passion (even if they frustrate you)? Your purpose often lies at the intersection of what you love, what you're good at, and what the world needs. It doesn't have to be grand – it just has to be genuinely yours.
Pillar Three: Joy
Joy was something I needed to reclaim when I was recovering from burnout. I had to learn to choose the things that make me happy and not endure things just because. As we become adults, we can lose that sense of playfulness and joyfulness in life, but we deserve to feel joyful at any point.
For me, it was really about picking hobbies that I know I really resonate with – things I love. Oceans, surfing, diving, and learning to salsa dance. These things make me laugh. I feel connected. I feel joyful. I feel adventurous. It's such a key pillar to feeling good, and I want people to reclaim that.
Start here: Make a list of activities that used to make you smile without trying. What's one tiny thing from that list you could do this week? Joy doesn't require permission or perfect timing. It just requires you to say yes to what lights you up, even in small doses.
Pillar Four: Self-Advocacy
This one I really, really think is critical. We often give our power away or put conditions on our life based on external forces. I've had to learn, as someone who was shy and a people pleaser, especially after going through burnout so it doesn't happen again – to understand what do I stand for, what are my limits, and how to advocate for those needs.
And to do that in a way that's considered, fair, and kind, so that I could no longer be trampled on. That creates what I call a grounded sense of confidence – a confidence that comes from within.
Practice this: Think of one small boundary you've been avoiding setting. It might be saying no to extra work when you're already stretched, or asking for what you need in a relationship. Start with the gentlest version of that boundary. Self-advocacy isn't about being harsh – it's about being honest about your needs so you can show up fully for what matters most.
Pillar Five: Connection
As humans, our greatest indicator of a good quality of life is the type of connections we have. They can be close connections, distant connections, our connections to ourselves, to the world around us, and how we're living our life. That's why connection is such a key part of shining bright.
Consider this: When did you last have a conversation that left you feeling truly seen and understood? Connection isn't about having hundreds of friends – it's about quality moments where you feel genuinely yourself with others. This week, reach out to someone who makes you feel like the best version of yourself, or spend five minutes really listening to your own inner voice without judgment.
These five pillars – Ease, Purpose, Joy, Self-Advocacy, and Connection – aren't a checklist to tick off. They're invitations to explore what each one means in your unique life, in your own circumstances, with your own dreams and challenges.
The beautiful thing is, you don't need to master all five at once. Often, focusing on just one pillar can create a ripple effect that naturally strengthens the others. Maybe you start with reclaiming joy, and that leads to clearer self-advocacy. Or perhaps you begin with ease, and from that calm centre, your sense of purpose becomes clearer.
Because when you understand what these pillars mean for you, that's when you begin to shine authentically bright.
